| Some of us made oat biscuits. |
We decided after lots of suggestions that we would go to Happy Valley for our One Planet Picnic because most of the class hadn't been among the trees there.
We decided to make our own picnic using Orcadian ingredients wherever we could.
We made our own white bread for slicing, granary rolls, bere bannocks and oat biscuits.
We bought Orkney cheese, cucumber and tomatoes and even made our butter!
Another group made rolls. It was hard work kneading the dough, but they looked good when they came out of the oven.
We made our own bread in the breadmaker. The delicious smell in the classroom made us all feel hungry!
We put cream in a jar and shook it for ages. It was good fun dancing to the music and we speeded it up by putting in a marble. After a while it got thick and we had butter! We poured off the buttermilk and patted the butter into a container. We remembered to take out the marble!
Everybody chose their own filling and spread the bere bannocks with our butter. Then we all packed and labelled our snack along with a bottle of water each.
On Wednesday afternoon we set off in the bus.
It was a lovely sunny day and Happy Valley was a lovely spot to watch the waterfall at the burn and look for all the different trees. Some of the trees had stone carvings to say what kind they were and we saw an oak tree, sycamores, ash, a monkey puzzle tree and a rowan.
Everybody enjoyed their picnic. We made sure that we had tidied up everything and took all our rubbish back to school. There were hardly any leftovers!
